Carnitine is one of the essential amino acid derivatives that play an essential role in energy production through Carnitine transporter. It transports long-chain fatty acids to the mitochondria the powerhouse of cells. L-carnitine and D-cranitine are the major derivatives of carnitine complex. Hence, this research is aimed to develop a comparative study based on the structures of these two derivatives. Studies have shown that the L-carnitine is biologically highly active buts its enantiomer D-carnitine is very inactive. On the other hand, some studies have mentioned that D-carnitine plays an important role in triggering the antagonist in the L-carnitine. There is no concrete proof of the mechanism of the D-carnitine within the biological system. As opined by Zhang et al. (2016), L-carnitine can be used for different medical treatments like cancer and diabetes but there is no such use of D-carnitine in medical treatments. It is the structural difference of these derivatives, which lead to the functional differences. However, structural comparison between L-carnitine and D-carnitine is the subject of further research. This research proposal is going to propose a study to identify those structural differences.
