Rewording a sentence
- Paste a passage from your own draft: up to 500 characters as a guest, or 2,000 with a free account.
- Pick the mode that fits what you want to fix.
- Run it and read the rewrite side by side with your original.
- Copy back only the changes you agree with, and keep any citations exactly where they were.
Picking a mode
Think about what's wrong with the sentence before you choose. If you can't tell, run the same text through two modes and compare.
- Too informal? Academic removes slang and contractions and tightens the tone.
- Clunky or choppy? Fluency joins ideas up and smooths the rhythm.
- Hard to follow? Simplify uses plainer words and shorter sentences.
- Over the word limit? Shorten trims a sentence down.
- Too thin? Expand adds explanation, but every new claim needs checking against a source.
- Sounds repetitive? Creative varies the wording, which suits reflective pieces more than technical ones.
- Not sure? Standard gives a balanced rewrite at about the same length.
Rewording isn't citing
A new set of words doesn't change where an idea came from. Anything you took from a reading still needs an in-text citation and a reference list entry, however it was reworded. Our APA citation generator and citation generator can format those for you, and our guide on how to avoid plagiarism covers the rules in more depth.
Your university's AI rules come first
Universities are taking different lines on AI tools. Some are fine with them for polishing your own writing, some want them declared in a cover note, and some rule them out for particular assessments. Find your course's policy before using any AI rewriter, and keep your earlier drafts as a record of how the piece took shape.
A paraphrase you can do without any tool
Being able to paraphrase on your own is a skill markers look for. Try this the next time you're working from a source:
- Read the passage twice, then put it away.
- Explain the idea out loud or in a note, as if to a classmate.
- Write it up in a sentence that fits your argument, not the source's.
- Go back to the original to check accuracy and make sure no distinctive phrases slipped through.
- Add the citation straight away so you don't lose track of it.
Watch for meaning drift
AI rewrites can quietly change what a sentence claims. "Linked to" becomes "causes", "most" becomes "all", or a precise term turns into a vaguer one. In law, health and science writing that's a real error, not a style choice. Read every rewrite against your original before you keep it.
Where your text goes
Your passage is sent through our server to Google's Gemini AI to produce the rewrite. Leave out personal details, confidential material and anything you've been asked not to share. As a guest you get a few free runs each day; sign in to a free account for more.
