Your reference list

References you add appear here, sorted the way APA 7 sorts them. They stay in this browser until you clear them.

Why referencing earns marks

References show your marker where your evidence comes from and credit the people whose ideas you build on. Most rubrics give marks for referencing on its own, so a messy list costs you even when the writing is strong. Using someone's words or ideas without citing them is plagiarism; our guide on how to avoid plagiarism sets out when a citation is needed.

A page for each style

Want examples first? Every style has its own page showing correct references and the mistakes markers see most.

  • APA 7 referencing

For psychology, nursing, education and social science. Author and year in brackets in the text.

  • Harvard referencing

For business, management and humanities, following the Cite Them Right version.

  • Vancouver referencing

For medicine and health. Sources are numbered in the order you first cite them.

  • IEEE referencing

For engineering and computing. Numbers in square brackets point to the list.

  • OSCOLA referencing

For law in the UK: footnotes, tables of cases and legislation, and a bibliography.

  • AGLC referencing

For law in Australia: AGLC 4 footnotes and a bibliography split into parts.

Making a reference list in four steps

  1. Select the style your course uses.
  2. Say what kind of source it is (book, article, website and so on), then paste its DOI or fill in the fields.
  3. Look over the preview and add it to your list.
  4. Paste the in-text citation where you use the source, and the full list at the end of your work.
