Grades on the Saudi scale
Grading at Saudi public universities is set by the Unified Regulations for Undergraduate Study and Examinations. Most grade out of 5.00; a few, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals among them, use 4.00. The regulations set out both.
Out of 5.00, A+ (95 to 100) is worth 5.00, A (90 to 94) 4.75, B+ 4.50, B 4.00, C+ 3.50, C 3.00, D+ 2.50 and D (60 to 64) 2.00. A fail scores 1.00 on the 5.00 scale and 0.00 on the 4.00 scale.
Semester and cumulative GPA
For each course, credit hours × grade points gives quality points. Divide the semester's total quality points by its total credit hours for your semester GPA, and do the same across all semesters for your cumulative GPA.
The regulations' own worked example has grades of B+, C, A and B in courses of 2, 3, 3 and 4 credit hours. That comes to 48.25 quality points over 12 hours: a GPA of 4.02 out of 5.00, or 3.02 out of 4.00.
Ratings and honours
Your graduation rating follows your cumulative GPA. Out of 5.00, Excellent is 4.50 or higher, Very Good 3.75 to 4.49, Good 2.75 to 3.74 and Pass 2.00 to 2.74.
First honours require a cumulative GPA of at least 4.75 (3.75 out of 4.00) and second honours at least 4.25 (3.25). You must also have no failed courses, graduate within the permitted time and complete at least 60% of your credits at your own university.
