IEEE Citation Generator
Produce numbered IEEE references for engineering, electronics and computing reports, conference papers included. Our programming experts use IEEE for technical work.
What are you referencing?
Details come from Crossref. Check them against the source before you use them.

Your references
References you add appear here, sorted the way IEEE sorts them. They stay in this browser until you clear them.
Making an IEEE reference list
- Enter sources in the order they first appear in your report; each takes the next number in square brackets.
- Pick Journal article, Conference paper, Book, Book chapter, Web page or Report.
- Paste a DOI and press Look up to fill the fields, then check them.
- Use the bracketed number, for example [1], in your text.
- Copy the numbered list into your report's References section.
How IEEE works
IEEE style comes from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and is standard in engineering, electronics and computing. It's numbered: each source is numbered by when you first cite it, and the reference list keeps that order.
This tool follows the IEEE Reference Guide. Initials go before surnames, titles of articles and papers sit in quotation marks, and journal and proceedings names are italic.
Citing in the text
Place the number in square brackets inside the sentence, before any punctuation. It can also act as a noun, as in "as shown in [2]". Use the same number every time you cite that source.
- One source: …cuts training time [1].
- More than one: [2], [3], or a range [4]–[6]
- With a page: [1, p. 210]
Getting the details right
List up to six authors. With more than six, IEEE gives the first author and et al., and the generator applies this for you. Conference papers need the proceedings or conference name, its location and the page range.
Many journal and conference names are abbreviated in IEEE, such as IEEE Trans. Ind. Electron. If your department wants abbreviations, enter them in the name field. For bigger projects, our programming and computer science help covers reports and documentation.
