Files are helped in storing and saving the data of the consumers, yet Files are managed into the operating system by maintaining a Specific way. Normally, for making systematic all the Files, Folders and directories are used.

A Folder is besides known as the ampule or box of the Files in which a lot of Subdirectories and Files are saved and maintained. Still, there is besides an Access process in which data and information of the File will be opened and retrieved by the consumer.

The above facts say that, from which place or position data of the File will be approachable. There are many types of saving structures which agree on behalf of specific Locations. File data can be Read.

There are 3 kinds of Attributes and characteristics of the Files, those are mentioned below:

1. Read: in this, we will only read the information from the file, but we won’t be able to modify the Data and information of the File.

2. Write: in this, we will read and write the information and data as well from the file.

3. Hide: Hidden Files cannot be seen by the user. yet these files will stay Saved and stored on the Computer system of the user.

we are having two kinds of Access method in which Files can Read information from the computer or operating system. Name of those methods are:

1. Sequential method

2. Random method

A file is defined as a, named group of concerned data and information which is logged and tapped on storage of secondary type, for example, optical disks, magnetic tapes, and magnetic disks. In the usual way, a file is an arrangement and series of bytes, bits, records or lines whose significance is explained by the user and files creator.

File Structure

A File Structure must be as per the needed format that the computer operating system can interpret or know. The format is shown below:

  1. A file should have a fixed and well-defined structure as per its type.
  2. A text type file is a series and arrangement of characters which is managed into the lines.
  3. A source kind of file is a series and arrangement of functions and procedures.
  4. An object kind of file is a series and arrangement of bytes managed into blocks and chunks that are clear and interpreted by the computer machine.
  5. When an operating system explains different types of file structures, it, in addition, includes the code and program to help these structures of file. MS-DOS and Unix support very a smaller number of the file structure.

File Directories:

it is a collection of files. The file directory includes data related to the ownership, files, location and including attributes. Much of this data, normally which is concerned with saving, is controlled through the operating system. The file directory is itself a type of file, which is accessible by different routines of file management.

Information covered in a file device directory is given below:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Type
  • Maximum length
  • Current length

  • Protection information
  • Owner id

Some Advantages of having file directories in the operating system are mentioned here:

  • Efficiency: it increases efficiency. A file can be found in very little time or quickly.
  • Naming: It is very convenient for the consumers to have a similar name for dissimilar files or may have a dissimilar name for two same files.
  • Grouping: Logical grouping and categories of files can be managed by the characteristics such as all games and all java programs etc.

Properties of a File System
some vital properties of a file system are explained below:

  • Files are loaded and saved on disk or any other saving space and it does not vanish when a consumer gets log off.
  • Files have any name and that is linked with the permission of access that allows controlled distribution.
  • Files can be set or more complicated structures to reproduce the connection between them.

File Attributes
A file has a name, information, and data. furthermore, it, in addition, saves metadata like file creation time, creation date, last modified date, and current size, etc. All this data and information are known as the attributes of a file system in the operating system.

Here we are having some basic File attributes that are used in Operating System:

  • Protection: This file attribute allocates, manages and controls the retrieve the rights of writing, executing and reading the file.
  • Type: This type of file attribute is needed for the systems that help different types of files.
  • Size: this kind of Attribute applied to display the present size of the file.
